“Hearing a diagnosis of cancer is one of the hardest challenges a patient can face. The see-saw of emotions that come before each scan or visit, the oftentimes tiring treatments, and the uncertainty of knowing whether it is all working. Having gone through the same experience when my mother and grandfather were diagnosed with cancer, I understand how difficult this can be. I also recognize an oncologist’s ability to help patients extends beyond just the ability to deliver effective and up-to-date therapy. It means serving at various turns as a passionate cheerleader, a thoughtful listener, and an honest advocate. My role as an oncologist is to understand a patient’s goals and help guide them through the full spectrum of cancer treatments”
