What is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a cancer caused by asbestos and is most commonly found in the abdomen, lungs, or heart. This cancer can take 10 to 50 years to develop after asbestos exposure. The people at most risk are blue-collar workers, veterans, and people living near asbestos mines or natural deposits.

The general symptoms of mesothelioma include:

  • Chest pain or abdominal pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fluid buildup
  • Fatigue
  • Fever and night sweats
  • Weight loss

People at high risk of asbestos exposure are more likely to develop peritoneal mesothelioma (resource from Mesothelioma Justice Network). The peritoneum is a thin membrane that covers the abdominal cavity and the organs, including the stomach, liver, spleen, and intestines.

Common symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include:

  • Abdominal fluid buildup
  • Abdominal pain
  • Bloating
  • Fever and night sweats
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite

Unexplained weight loss

How Mesothelioma is Diagnosed

At our cancer center, doctors will perform a series of tests to determine a mesothelioma diagnosis. A biopsy is the only way to definitively diagnose mesothelioma, which may include a fine-needle aspiration, a core needle biopsy, or a diagnostic laparoscopy.

If you are diagnosed with mesothelioma, our cancer center doctors and cancer surgeons will thoroughly review and discuss cancer treatment options and what would be the best option based on the cancer stage, your age, and your health history. You can be assured that we will do everything possible to provide outstanding care that is highly personalized to meet your needs.

Mesothelioma Treatments

Treatments for mesothelioma include surgery, chemotherapy, CyberKnife, and traditional radiation therapy. Many cancer treatment doctors and cancer surgeons use a multimodal approach, meaning they combine two or more treatment options in an attempt to eradicate the cancer.

During your treatment, your cancer treatment team will support you through any difficulties that treatment may bring. We know that treatment is not easy, and we strive our hardest to make the process as seamless, worry-free, and comfortable as possible.

Regular follow-up visits will ensure that your treatment is safely working with minimal side effects. Of course, at all times, your oncologist and cancer surgeon are available to discuss any issues or concerns that you may have. We want to ensure that you are informed on all developments and aspects of your health and cancer treatment.
