More than 7,000 Californians will be diagnosed with melanoma this year, according to the American Cancer Society. Dr. Michael Forrest, Epic Care Board Certified Radiation Oncologist, shares in the publications below the three tips everyone needs to know to arm themselves against harmful UV rays during Skin Cancer Awareness Month and every month.
Our board-certified oncologists are experts in the field of cancer diagnosis, staging and managing the complexities of treatment. Initial consultation visits can be promptly scheduled at our facilities where patients are seen in comfortable private offices. Diagnostic tests can be ordered and processed conveniently within the same facility. These tests will be reviewed and discussed with patients in detail in order to provide the best treatment option suited for each individual. The administration of treatment can be performed in the comfort and convenience of our state-of-the-art, in-office infusion suites. Treatment options include chemotherapy, immune-therapy, newer biologic agents and experimental therapy. Our personal team of oncologists and oncology-certified nursing staff supervise and administer treatment first hand. They will also provide constant support through any difficulties with treatment. Regular follow-up visits with an Epic Care oncologist will ensure treatment is effective and proceeding safely with minimum side effects. Our patients have open access to oncologists to discuss any issues of concern and to stay fully informed regarding all aspects of their health and treatment.
Radiation Oncology
Radiation oncology is the art and science of using therapeutic radiation (consisting of x-rays and higher energy particles) to eradicate tumors as well as control certain benign growths. Our approach to treating cancer is on the cutting edge utilizing the most advanced and appropriate radiation therapies available.
These advanced techniques allow us to protect more normal tissue, and in some cases, to complete radiation treatment more quickly. Our radiation oncologists are recognized leaders in their field and serve in leadership roles in the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) and American College of Radiology (ACR). Epic Care Radiation Oncology services are offered at our Antioch, Dublin and Pleasant Hill Care Centers.
Hematology
Our doctors are also certified hematologists, with expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders, including anemia and other low blood counts, bleeding and blood clotting disorders, lymphomas and leukemias. If indicated, bone marrow biopsies are performed in our offices.
Diagnostic Imaging
In cancer care, Positron Emission Tomography and Computed Tomography (PET/CT) scans are used to determine the extent of the disease and also to evaluate response to treatment. A PET scan utilizes a radioactive glucose isotope that highlights malignant cells, identifying malignant lesions that may have been overlooked by conventional imaging (CT, MRI or X-ray). PET provides information regarding the potential malignancy of a lesion. CT provides detailed information about the size, shape and anatomic location of the area of concern. When both technologies are utilized simultaneously - the diagnostic accuracy is greatly enhanced. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses powerful magnets and radio waves to create detailed pictures of areas inside the body. These pictures can help distinguish normal, healthy soft tissue from diseased tissue. All Epic Care locations offer ACR accredited diagnostic services, and PET/CT and CT services are offered at our Antioch, Dublin and Pleasant Hill Care Centers. We also offer MRI services at our Pleasant Hill location.
